Casas del Río

You are here

If you doubt the highlight of this district is the wooden wheel originally built in the eighteenth century

Casas del Río was founded in the 15th century, initially as a part of Cofrentes and with a Moorish population. The hamlet was formally founded in 1720 by Antonio and Asensio Serrano, a family from Jalance whose ancestors built dams on the river and made waterwheels to aid in irrigation. Casas del Río was a part of Cofrentes until 1874, when it was transferred to the jurisdiction of Requena.

Casas del Río, marked by the Cabriel river, is one of the few hamlets in the region inside the Las Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park, which also spans the boundaries of Villagordo, Venta del Moro and Requena.

Without a doubt, the most notable aspect of this hamlet is its waterwheel. Restored in 2001 with iroko wood, it has a 9.6-metre diameter and 20 spokes on each side. Originally built in the 18th century, it can extract up to 1,500 litres per minute, depending on the flow rate of the Cabriel river. It's the only working waterwheel in the entire region of Valencia. Inhabitants of Casas del Río are also proud of the San Antonio de Padua parish church, built in 1893. Its façade bears ceramic reconstructions of the founding of the hamlet and the building of the waterwheel. Of note is the private trout fishing reserve.

Agriculture here relies on both dry farming and irrigation farming. The former is used for vineyards, olive trees and almond trees. Irrigation farming is now confined to Roncinada de Muñoz, a 19-hectare farm located between the hamlet and the Cabriel river. Two kilometres away from Casas del Río is the Campus Moragete educational complex, which offers language courses and adventure activities (, Tel. +34 96 230 24 99 - +34 96 233 80 01 - +34 692 608 644).

This town is home to the La Noria del Cabriel restaurant, which offers traditional cuisine (Tel. +34 962 33 80 56).
